Jesus flipped the tables in the temple to protest financial exploitation, the desecration of a sacred space, and corrupt religious leadership. According to the Gospels (such as Matthew 21 and John 2), merchants and money changers were overcharging poor pilgrims for sacrificial animals and turning God's house into a "den of robbers".
